Safer Internet Day

We have celebrated Safer Internet Day through assemblies involving the whole school. We also recorded and podcast children’s e-safety messages on our school radio.

Discussion starters for KS1

Show the following website from the BBC on your interactive whiteboard:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/help/web/besmart.shtml

Talk through each of the SMART guidelines outlined in the programme. If you have sometime to talk about eSafety everyday you may like to split this up over a couple of days, and by Thursday you could turn the sound off and children could take turns being the characters in the animation.

Further questions:

  • Where is the internet? What do you use it for?
  • What can you share? What information is not for sharing?
  • What do your parents say to help you stay safe?

Discussion starters for KS 2

You could use a different discussion starter each day of the week:

1. http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/watch/staysafe/wpstaysafeonlinegaming

Can you play too many online games?  What are the risks?

2. http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/watch/staysafe/wpstaysafesocialnetworking

How old do you have to be on the popular social networking sites? Is your information private?

3. http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/watch/staysafe/wpstaysafeinstantmessenger

How do you decide who your online friends are?  What you advise your friends?

4. http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/watch/staysafe/wpstaysafechatrooms

Where do you go online to chat?  Club penguin?  Somewhere else?  How do you report people who mis-behave online.

5. http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/8_10/cybercafe/Cyber-Cafe-Base/

Click on ‘Brain teaser’ to run a class quiz.

6. What is your digital footprint?  What does this term mean?  What happens if you have a large footprint?
